WEEK OF FEBRUARY 12

Some interesting bills added to the tracker this week include these four bills focused on support for emerging farmers: 

  • A166, Directs Dept. of Agriculture to develop and implement beginning farmer mentoring program in cooperation with certain agricultural and educational organizations and entities

  • S626, Establishes "New Farmers Improvement Grant Program" to provide matching grants for farm improvements to beginning farmers

  • S1881, Requires NJEDA to establish loan program to assist beginning farmers in financing capital purchases.

  • S724, Authorizes counties to establish mentoring programs for, and resell preserved farmland at reduced price to beginning farmers.

One bill connecting support by NJEDA to urban producers:

S2186, Requires NJEDA to establish to assist an urban farmers grant and loan program .

And several that focus on changes to eligibility for SNAP, including: 

A3186, Provides for student recipients of educational opportunity funds to be exempt from 20 hour weekly work requirement ordinarily required for student SNAP participation.

A2958, Requires Commissioner of Human Services to request authorization for SNAP benefits to be used to pay delivery charges for online grocery purchases.
